Abuja, Nigeria – The crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continue to depen following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Anyanwu, a close ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, was affirmed in his position based on a Supreme Court judgment.According to INEC, Anyanwu remains the recognized National Secretary, citing a Supreme Court judgment and lack of due process in removing him. Any removal would require a 21-day notice and INEC’s involvement.
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting was held on May 27, 2025, where the INEC recognition was discussed. The NEC resolved to reconvene on June 30 to further deliberate on Anyanwu’s status.
Nyesom Wike has accused the party leadership of reneging on previous agreements and announced his withdrawal from reconciliation efforts, blaming Governors Seyi Makinde and Peter Mbah for deepening the party’s internal crisis.
A reconciliation committee chaired by former Senate President Bukola Saraki convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders, but the outcome remains unclear.
The recognition of Anyanwu by INEC is seen as a victory for Wike, but it may further strain relations between Wike and other PDP leaders.
The party’s internal conflicts, including the Rivers State crisis, zoning disputes, and disagreements over congresses, continue to fester, leading to multiple defections and postponed NEC meetings.
The PDP’s future continue to hangs in the balance as the party grapples with internal power struggles and leadership tussles.
The recognition of Anyanwu as National Secretary may give Wike more influence over the party’s decisions, potentially shaping the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
