Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reportedly defected from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to reports, Oborevwori made the announcement after a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba.
His Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, confirmed the decision, citing “wide consultations with political stakeholders and the interest of Delta’s long-term development”.
The development has continued to trail the detection with some APC members expressing confidence that Oborevwori’s defection will guarantee him a return as Governor in the 2027 elections, citing President Tinubu’s backing.
However, PDP leaders in Delta State have not officially commented on the defection, but some PDP members have expressed disappointment over the detection.
Before the announcement, Oborevwori denied rumors of defecting, stating he’s committed to the PDP and focused on delivering more projects to Deltans.
Oborevwori’s defection could lead to a shift in Delta State’s politics, with possible implications for the 2027 governorship election.
There also speculations in some quarters that Ovie Omo-Agege and Ned Nwoko might be offered Senate seats to pave the way for Oborevwori’s second term.
