Organised labour in Nigeria, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), is strongly condemning President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. They’re demanding an immediate reversal of this decision, which they deem unconstitutional.
The labour unions argue that this move will have severe socio-economic repercussions, including disruption of economic activities, job losses, wage cuts, and economic hardship for thousands of workers in both formal and informal sectors.
They also believe it will create an atmosphere of uncertainty, discouraging investment and slowing economic growth in Rivers State and beyond.
Furthermore, the NLC and TUC are emphasizing that the President’s declaration violates the provisions of Part II, Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and constitutes an overreach of executive power.
They’re called on President Tinubu to revoke this declaration and respect constitutional limits.
