Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has announced plans to host a security summit to address the rising insecurity in the state, particularly in areas such as Kwande, Ukum, Katsina-Ala, Logo and Gwer-West.
The governor made this disclosure while interacting with an advisory team sent by the Chief of Defence Staff to assess the security situation.
Governor Alia emphasized that his administration has been working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser and has established a committee to organize the summit, which will involve both state and private sector stakeholders.
He also mentioned plans for a broader North Central Security Summit with fellow governors in the region.
The governor expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his efforts in restoring peace in Benue and urged the team to extend their visit to neighboring states, Taraba and Nasarawa, given their shared borders.
He also called for the public disclosure of sponsors of militia in the state to facilitate immediate action towards peace restoration.
The advisory team, led by Air Vice Marshal Emmanuel Oche, suggested a non-kinetic approach to addressing security challenges, including disarmament, reintegration and resettlement of militia.
They commended Governor Alia’s efforts towards peace restoration in the state.
