Our Client Spoke The Truth And Nothing But The Truth -Professor Gundu’s Lawyers Respond To Governor Sule’s Legal Threats

Legal representatives of Professor Zacharys Anger Gundu have issued a strong rebuttal to a demand for retraction and apology made by the legal team of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State over comments made during a televised townhall on the Benue crisis.

In a detailed letter dated July 28, 2025, addressed to Ahmed Raji, SAN, lawyers for Professor Gundu firmly rejected the governor’s allegations of defamation, insisting that their client “spoke the truth and nothing but the truth” at the NewsCentral TV Townhall held on July 10, 2025.

The event focused on the ongoing violence in Benue State and was themed “Crisis in the Heartland: Ending the Cycle of Violence in Benue.”

Professor Gundu, who had accused successive Nasarawa State administrations—including that of Governor Sule—of harbouring armed Fulani herdsmen responsible for deadly attacks in Benue, now faces legal threats demanding a public apology.

However, his legal team, led by Professor Sebastine T. Hon, SAN, has stood its ground in support of Professor Gundu.

According to the letter, Professor Gundu’s statements were based on publicly available evidence and justified under the legal principles of fair comment and justification.

The response cited numerous media reports and government statements—many attributed directly to Governor Sule—highlighting the presence of militant groups in Nasarawa State.
