Plateau State Makes History with Africa’s First Climate Assembly Jos, Plateau State –
In a groundbreaking move, the Plateau State government has launched Africa’s first-ever Climate Assembly, a pioneering initiative aimed at tackling the climate crisis through inclusive and evidence-based policymaking.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Secretary to the Government of the State, Arch. Samuel Jatau, inaugurated the Assembly, which is mandated to develop and implement strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainable practices, enhance climate resilience, and support climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
The initiative is a testament to the state’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis and has been widely praised by environmental stakeholders.
The Climate Adaptation Business Alliance (CABA) and Green Sahara Farms have commended the state government for its foresight and dedication to climate resilience.
The Assembly’s launch marks a significant milestone in Plateau State’s climate action efforts and has positioned the state as a continental model for climate governance.
Its success could inspire other states and nations to follow suit in fostering local engagement, evidence-based policymaking, and innovative solutions to climate change.
The initiative was supported by technical consultants, including Fundlink Aid International, and built upon the foundational policy work of ACRESAL Plateau State.
Commissioner for Environment Peter Gwom’s hands-on leadership has been instrumental in driving the initiative forward.
As the first Climate Assembly in Africa, this initiative is expected to inform policy decisions, drive innovation, and foster collaboration to effectively address the climate crisis in Plateau State and beyond.
