Abuja, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently condemned the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for sealing its national headquarters in Abuja.
The party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, described the action as a “brazen abuse of power” and a “reckless attempt to undermine democracy”.
According to reports, the FCTA sealed the PDP headquarters over unpaid ground rent amounting to decades, with the party owing 28 years’ worth of payments. However, PDP leaders believe the move is politically motivated, especially given the sensitive timing amid deepening internal divisions and high-stakes strategic meetings within the opposition party.
The PDP has condemned the government’s action in the strongest terms, describing it as “irresponsible” and a “reckless display of irresponsibility”.
The party convened an emergency caucus meeting at the Bauchi Governors’ Lodge in Abuja to discuss the situation and potential next steps.
“We will hold the government accountable for its actions and ensure Nigerians understand the implications of what we describe as executive overreach and political intimidation,” Damagum stated.
The FCTA claims the PDP owes ₦6.9 billion in ground rent from 4,794 properties across high-value districts in Abuja, with some debts dating back 43 years.
The administration revoked the land titles of these properties, citing the Land Use Act, and has begun taking possession of them.
The development has sparked widespread controversy, with many Nigerians calling for the government to respect the rule of law and democratic institutions.
