Professor Sonnie Gwanle Tyoden, the former Deputy Governor of Plateau State is dead. He died on Saturday after a prolonged battle with illness, leaving behind a legacy that will be deeply felt in the state’s academic and political circles.
Professor Tyoden served with distinction as Deputy Governor alongside Governor Simon Bako Lalong from 2015 to 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His tenure was marked by significant contributions to the state’s development, showcasing his dedication to public service.Beyond his role in government, Tyoden was a towering figure in academia.
He served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos from 2006 to 2011, a period that saw significant growth and development in the institution.
His academic credentials are impressive, with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in International Relations and Political Economy from the University of Lancaster in the UK.
Born on September 2, 1950, Tyoden was a proud son of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. Throughout his career, he remained committed to the development of his state and country, earning him respect and admiration from his peers and the public.
Professor Tyoden’s passing is a monumental loss, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. May he rest in peace.
