Plateau State Government has taken a step to enforce Section 41 of (2) and 41 (3) of the Plateau State Local Government Council Law, 2016.
This enforcement was content in a letter signed by the Plateau State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Philemon Daffi, directing the LGC’s Chairmen to comply with immediate effect the provisions of the Law.
The directive mandated that each of the 17 Local Government Councils should appoint at least one person with a disability as a Supervisory Councilor as the law provides that the Chairmen ought to comply with this provision within 30 days of assuming office.
According to the letter, the State Government want, full implementation of this legal requirement, emphasizing the need for immediate compliance.
The directive, backed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, underscores the government’s commitment to fostering equal representation and participation in governance.
Speaking on the development, the Hon. Daffi reaffirmed the government’s stance on inclusivity and warned that any council failing to comply would face legal consequences.
“This is not just about compliance with the law; it is about recognizing the invaluable contributions of persons with disabilities in decision-making and governance,” the statement read.
As the 14-day compliance deadline approaches, the 17 local government chairmen are expected to fulfill their legal and moral obligation to ensure representation for persons with disabilities.
Accordingly, the Plateau State Government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing this provision, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of his or her ability, has a voice in governance as this development would mark a significant milestone in the journey towards an inclusive and participatory democracy in Plateau State.
