Nigerian Senator Victor Umeh is calling on former Military Head of State Yakubu Gowon to take responsibility for his actions during the 1967 civil war. Umeh wants Gowon to write a book detailing his role in the war and apologize to the Igbo people for the harm they suffered.
Umeh’s demand comes after former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida revealed that the 1966 coup was not led by the Igbo people, but rather a “revolutionary movement” by young officers.
Umeh believes Gowon owes Nigerians an explanation for his actions during the war and its aftermath, particularly regarding his promise of reconciliation, restitution, and rehabilitation, which was not fulfilled until he was overthrown in 1975.
The senator also emphasized the need for national reconciliation, stating that the Igbo people have been unfairly treated and marginalized since the war.
He hopes that Gowon’s apology and account of events will help to heal old wounds and promote unity among Nigerians.
