Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has taken legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, suing him for defamation and seeking N1.3 billion in damages.
The suit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court on February 25, 2025, stems from a Facebook post by Mfom Patrick, Akpabio’s aid.
The post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about “pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.”
The statements in question were made in response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resistance to a reassignment of her Senate seat, which was triggered by opposition members switching to the majority wing.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer, Victor Giwa, argued that these statements were defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, damaging his client’s dignity and reputation.
The lawsuit seeks not only financial damages but also a perpetual injunction to prevent Akpabio and his associates from making further defamatory statements.
