The Plateau State Police Command, in line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has commenced the enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy. Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina announced that the enforcement, which begins on February 1, 2025, is mandatory for all vehicle owners in the state.
According to the Third-Party Insurance Act, all vehicle owners must obtain a minimum of Third-Party Insurance to operate on Nigerian roads. The Commissioner expressed concern that most vehicles in the state are uninsured, posing significant challenges to road safety and compensation for accident victims.
The enforcement aims to:
- Ensure accident victims receive necessary compensation
- Provide medical coverage for injuries and damages sustained during travel
- Strengthen the insurance industry and create employment opportunities for Nigerian youths
- Promote a responsible driving culture within the state
Vehicle owners are urged to obtain valid Third-Party Insurance to avoid legal consequences. The Police Command has warned officers against corrupt practices during the enforcement period.
